Black widow

Black widows are common in West Texas meter boxes, well houses and anything opened twice a year, and the western black widow overwinters indoors rather than outside. A national review of 23,409 reported exposures over seven years found 65 percent had only minor effects and there were no deaths. The bite causes cramping rather than a wound.

Start with the outcome data, because it reframes everything else. A review of United States poison centre records covering 2000 through 2006 found 23,409 reported black widow exposures across 47 states. Among the cases with clinical effects, 65 percent were minor, a third were moderate, 1.4 percent were major — and across all seven years there were no deaths.

That is the single most useful fact on this page. It does not mean a bite is trivial: the moderate third involves genuinely unpleasant, occasionally severe symptoms. It means the animal's reputation and the animal's record are a long way apart.

And they are common here. Meter boxes, well houses, irrigation valve boxes, under stored material — anything dark, close to the ground and opened twice a year. The western black widow, which is the species expected across this region, also overwinters indoors, which is why people find them in garages in January.

Which widow, and what she looks like

Texas has four. The state checklist maintained at Texas A&M records the southern black widow, the western black widow, the northern black widow, and the introduced brown widow. Across the Llano Estacado and the Permian Basin, the western is the one to expect.

The mature female is the animal everybody pictures. A glossy, globular abdomen, body length somewhere around a quarter to three-eighths of an inch, with red markings. The hourglass is on the underside, which means seeing it properly requires the spider to be hanging in her web rather than sitting on a surface — and on the western species, published accounts note the hourglass varies considerably and may be split or reduced. A widow with an imperfect hourglass is still a widow.

Males and juveniles look like completely different animals, and this is where most misidentification happens in both directions. Males are much smaller, generally light brown or grey with banded legs. Immatures are pale, banded, and marked with red, orange or yellow spots. People kill these as unknown spiders and let females go for the same reason: neither looks like the picture.

Males are not a bite risk. Extension sources record no reports of bites from males at all.

The web is a better clue than the spider. Widow webs are irregular, tangled and three-dimensional rather than the neat wheel of an orb weaver — and they are noticeably strong, enough that you can feel it when you break one. They sit low to the ground in a dark sheltered place, with the spider hanging inverted at the centre or tucked into a retreat at the edge.

One species not on the Texas list: the red widow, which is restricted to Florida. If a source tells you it lives here, that source is not checking.

Where they are on a West Texas property

The habitat description in the literature reads like a list of things people reach into without looking, which is exactly why bites happen.

Meter boxes. Texas DSHS names them specifically, and they are the classic on this route: dark, sheltered, at ground level, and opened by somebody's hand a couple of times a year. Irrigation valve boxes, well houses and pump enclosures are the same proposition.

Stored material. Woodpiles, boxes, stacked timber, pallets, spare paving, tyres, anything that has sat undisturbed against a wall or in a shed. The underside of an object resting on the ground is prime.

Outbuildings and their contents. Garages, crawl spaces, sheds, barns, and the underside of outdoor furniture and tables. Texas A&M's own habitat list includes houses, outhouses, cotton fields, trash and dumps — which covers a fair amount of Gaines County as it actually looks on the ground.

Low, always. Widow webs are near ground level far more often than at head height, and low shrubs, pipes, drains and the gap beneath a step all appear in the published habitat lists. That is why the risk sits with hands rather than faces: reaching under, reaching behind, picking something up off the ground.

And indoors through the winter. Work on the western black widow records that they overwinter indoors as adults or immatures, and that hardly any will be found outside during the winter. For a semi-arid region this explains the seasonal pattern of calls precisely: widows concentrate in garages, crawl spaces, meter enclosures and stored materials when the weather turns, which is also when they are easiest to find and deal with.

A note for anyone with livestock or outbuildings. Feed rooms, tack rooms, water heater closets and the underside of feeders and troughs are all good widow habitat for the same reasons a meter box is — dark, sheltered, rarely disturbed, and with insect prey nearby. Those are also places people reach into daily without looking. On a working property the routine of looking first matters more than any treatment.

She is not looking for you. Texas A&M describes them as quite timid, attempting escape rather than attack when disturbed. Essentially every bite involves the spider being pressed against skin — a hand into a box, a foot into a boot, a body against a web in a confined space.

What the venom does, precisely

Widow venom works on nerves, not on tissue, and that single fact explains the whole clinical picture — including how to tell a widow bite from something else.

The mechanism. The active component binds irreversibly to receptors on nerve endings and opens calcium-permeable channels, causing a massive release of neurotransmitters. The result is called latrodectism: diffuse muscle rigidity and cramping, pain that spreads from the bite site rather than staying at it, nausea and vomiting, sweating, a raised heart rate and raised blood pressure.

The timing is distinctive. No pain is associated with the bite itself — people frequently do not know they have been bitten. Symptoms begin one to eight hours later. That delay is why the history matters: what were you doing, and where were your hands, several hours before the cramping started.

And there is no wound. This is the diagnostically useful part. A widow bite produces symptoms with no skin lesion. Severe cramping with essentially nothing to see is the picture. An ulcerating or necrotic wound is an argument against a widow and worth raising with whoever is treating it — a great many wounds get attributed to spiders that no spider caused, which we go into on the recluse spider page.

Recovery. Clinical sources describe complete recovery typically within 24 to 48 hours. Other accounts have symptoms declining over two or three days, occasionally lingering longer. Higher risk sits with small children and older adults, which is the ordinary pattern for anything of this kind.

Treatment is contested and it is a doctor's call. Texas DSHS states antivenom is generally not prescribed for widow envenomation and is reserved for extreme cases because of the risk of allergic reaction. Other clinical sources describe it as effective for symptom relief in suitable patients while acknowledging that same risk. The poison centre review found few patients receive it, though it was associated with shorter symptom duration in the more serious cases — and found no evidence that benzodiazepines or calcium shorten symptoms. We report the disagreement; we do not settle it, and neither should any pest control company.

The comparison that gets misused

You will read that black widow venom is fifteen times more toxic than the venom of a prairie rattlesnake. Texas DSHS does publish that line, so it is not internet invention.

What is almost always left off is the rest of the same passage, where DSHS immediately qualifies that only minute quantities are injected in a bite. It is a milligram-for-milligram laboratory comparison. It says nothing whatever about what happens to a person, because what happens to a person depends on dose, and the dose is tiny.

The figure that does describe outcomes is the one at the top of this page: 23,409 reported exposures across seven years, two-thirds with only minor effects, and no deaths. Why we bother making this point. Because quoting the first half of a state agency's sentence and dropping the qualifier is a very effective way to frighten somebody into booking a treatment, and it is the kind of thing that makes people distrust the whole trade. The spider is worth taking seriously on its actual merits. It does not need help.

Reducing them, in order of what actually works

Mechanical removal first. Vacuuming and sweeping webs, spiders and egg sacs is direct and immediate, and it takes the next generation with it. Egg sacs are white to tan or grey, pear-shaped to almost globular, papery, and a quarter to half an inch across; a female may produce several across a summer, with published egg counts per sac ranging widely between sources — anywhere from a couple of dozen to a few hundred. Removing sacs is worth more than removing adults.

Declutter the enclosed spaces. The habitat is undisturbed dark shelter close to the ground, so removing that is the durable answer. Getting stored material off the floor and away from walls changes a garage more than any spray does.

Sticky traps, which extension sources rate among the best tools for spiders that have got into a structure. They also tell you where the activity actually is, which decides where anything else goes.

Seal and screen. Gaps at doors, foundation penetrations, and vents. Extension guidance specifically mentions steel wool or copper mesh for sealing penetrations, along with tight-fitting screens and weather stripping.

Turn the lights down. Bright exterior lighting concentrates the flying insects that spiders eat, and a reliable food supply against a wall is what keeps webs there. Warmer lighting, aimed down rather than out, does quiet work.

Trim back and clear the perimeter. Weeds and low vegetation against a building are both harbourage and prey habitat, and clearing that band does double duty — it is the same work that reduces scorpion harbourage, for the same reason.

And the habit that prevents most bites. Shake out shoes, gloves, clothing, towels and bedding that have been in a garage or outbuilding, and look before reaching into a meter box, a valve box, a woodpile or anything else opened twice a year. That costs nothing and addresses the actual mechanism by which people get bitten.

The life cycle, and why sacs matter more than spiders

A female is long-lived by spider standards. Laboratory females have lived three years; males live up to about one. That longevity is part of why a meter box that had a widow in it last year is likely to have one this year — it may well be the same animal, and if it is not, it is because the site was good enough that something else took it.

The egg sacs are the part worth finding. White to tan or grey, pear-shaped to nearly round, with a tough papery texture, a quarter to half an inch across, hung in the web rather than sitting on a surface. A female produces several across a summer. Published counts per sac vary a great deal between sources — from a couple of dozen up into the hundreds — which is itself worth knowing, because a source quoting one precise number has probably not looked at more than one source.

Spiderlings emerge in stages. Second-stage spiderlings come out roughly four weeks after the sac is made, and they are orange and white — nothing like the adult female. A scatter of small pale banded spiders around a garage in late summer is very often a hatched sac rather than an unrelated species.

Which is why removal beats killing. Treating an adult and leaving three sacs in the same enclosure solves the visible half of the problem and leaves the arithmetic intact. When we work a garage or a run of meter and valve boxes, sacs are what we are actually looking for, and what we would tell you to look for yourself.

And they do not disperse far. Unlike many spiders, widows tend to establish close to where they hatched if the conditions suit. A property with good habitat — stored material, low sheltered voids, reliable insect prey around lighting — tends to keep a population rather than acquire one each year, and that is genuinely fixable by changing the habitat.
