West Texas pest library
A reference library for the pests that actually matter in West Texas, sourced to Texas A&M AgriLife Extension rather than to national pest control copy. Identification comes first, because several of the most common calls out here turn out to be an animal that does no harm — and because a treatment aimed at the wrong species is money spent on the wrong problem.
Most pest library pages on the internet are the same twelve articles rewritten, describing species as though the whole country were one place. That is not much use in a region where the honest answer to several of the most common questions is "that is not what you think it is, and it is not going to hurt anything."
These pages are sourced to Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, written against the conditions here, and explicit about the places where what the sources say and what everybody believes are not the same thing.
Striped bark scorpion
Centruroides vittatus — The defining household pest of the Permian Basin — and not deadly, whatever you have been told.
Subterranean termites
Reticulitermes spp. — Why the dry-climate assumption is wrong, when they swarm here, and how to tell a desert termite from a structural threat.
Red harvester ant
Pogonomyrmex barbatus — The bare circular mound with foraging trails. Stings hard, does not come indoors — and Texas A&M says leave most of them alone.
Red imported fire ant
Solenopsis invicta — At the western edge of its range here, and mostly a Basin problem rather than a Llano one. Two widely quoted risk numbers, both misread.
Recluse spiders
Loxosceles spp. — Present, worth respecting, and the most over-diagnosed bite in American medicine — with the numbers.
Black widow
Latrodectus spp. — Meter boxes, well houses and anything opened twice a year — and 23,409 reported exposures with no deaths.
House mouse
Mus musculus — A quarter-inch gap, a thirty-foot world — and why it is not the hantavirus mouse.
Norway rat and roof rat
Rattus norvegicus, R. rattus — One burrows, one nests overhead — and only one of them is documented in this region.
German cockroach
Blattella germanica — The one where spraying makes it worse, with the extension evidence for why.
Field crickets
Gryllus spp. — The autumn flight lasts a fortnight — and Texas A&M says the lighting matters more than the insecticide.
Paper wasps and yellowjackets
Polistes spp., Vespula spp. — When a nest is genuinely urgent and when it can wait for winter — and the one rural remedy that must never be used.
Mosquitoes
Culicidae — Flight range decides whether your yard matters — from one mile to ten — and the West Nile numbers with the county detail attached.
Four things everybody believes that the sources contradict
These are the ones worth knowing before anything else, because each of them changes a decision somebody is about to make.
One — "Texas scorpions can kill you." AgriLife's wording is that none of the scorpions in Texas are considered deadly, and that stings produce only moderate reactions in most people because the venom has little effect on the nervous system. The dangerous North American species is the Arizona bark scorpion, and it is a different animal. Stings hurt, swelling lasts days, allergic reactions happen, and young children warrant caution — but the fear is out of proportion to the animal, and it gets used to sell things.
Two — "It is too dry for termites out here." No extension source supports this, and AgriLife says the opposite: where moisture is available, termites can be away from soil for extended periods, and defective plumbing, leaky roofs, air conditioning condenser leaks and poor gutters supply it. In a region with sixteen inches of rain, landscape irrigation may be the only reliable water for a hundred feet. The belief itself is what causes the under-protection.
Three — "Fire ants are everywhere in Texas." AgriLife records that they infest the eastern two-thirds of the state plus some urban areas in western Texas, and that western expansion depends largely on the availability of surface or ground water. That puts our service area on the edge of the range, with fire ants chiefly in irrigated urban and municipal landscapes — Midland, Odessa, Big Spring, parts of Lubbock — and largely absent from dryland caliche further north and west. In Gaines, Yoakum, Terry, Dawson and Andrews, the answer is nearly always a harvester ant.
Four — mud in the pasture is a termite emergency. Fragile mud sheets and tubes on fence posts, dead grass and dung across shortgrass pasture from May to September are the desert termite, Gnathamitermes tubiformans — common in south and west Texas, does not tunnel into wood, causes no structural damage, and described by AgriLife as medically harmless to man and animals. It is a rangeland forage issue and a grazing signal, not a threat to a building.
Identify first — it is the cheapest step
Everything on this site argues that inspection comes before treatment. Identification is the front half of that, and it is the step most often skipped because it feels like a delay.
The wrong product on the wrong species does not just fail. A repellent applied to a species that responds by scattering turns one contained population into three. A bait aimed at a seed-harvesting ant is a bait that never gets taken. A general perimeter spray on a scorpion problem misses the harbourage that is actually producing them.
And a surprising share of calls need no treatment at all. The mud on the fence line. The mound in the back pasture. The large dark roach that came in from outside and will not establish. The single spider. Telling somebody that costs us a job and it is the correct answer.
How to give us a usable identification over the phone. Size against something known — a grain of rice, a sesame seed, a pencil eraser, a quarter. Where exactly, and how many. What time of day. What else is there: droppings, shed skins, wings on a windowsill, mud, a smell, a sound at a particular hour. Those secondary signs are frequently more diagnostic than the animal.
And say what you have already done. Store-bought spray, bait, a fogger, a previous company, a neighbour's treatment. None of that is a judgement and all of it changes what the evidence means — a population that has been pushed around by a repellent reads completely differently from one that has not been touched.
Better still, photograph it. Phone camera, as close as it will focus, with something beside it for scale. It resolves in ten seconds what five minutes of description cannot, and it means the visit arrives already knowing what it is dealing with. Text it to us — identification is free and always will be, whether or not it turns into a job. That is not a loss leader — it is that half of the value we can add to a property is telling somebody they do not have the problem they think they have.
What makes this region different
National pest content assumes a wetter, milder, more forested country. Almost every structural fact about pest pressure here follows from four conditions that content does not account for.
There is almost no permanent surface water. Gaines, Terry, Dawson and Yoakum counties have no permanent streams at all. The country drains to playa basins and draws that fill after rain and are dry the rest of the year. Beals Creek at Big Spring is intermittent. That makes mosquito pressure a series of events rather than a season, and it means anything artificial that holds water on a property becomes the dominant feature of its pest picture.
The soil drains fast. Sandy loam and sand over clay subsoil across most of the route. Water moves through it and away, which concentrates everything around whatever holds moisture — the irrigation head against the foundation, the condensate line discharging in one spot all summer, the leaking spigot. In wetter country those are minor maintenance items. Here they are frequently the whole explanation for a problem.
The wind and dust wear out seals. Door sweeps flatten, weatherstripping hardens and cracks, screens tear, and weep hole screening disappears. Combined with a housing stock whose median construction year across most of these towns sits in the 1960s and 1970s, that produces a predictable set of entry points on property after property — and it is why exclusion so often does more here than treatment.
And agriculture sets the calendar. Cotton, peanuts, sorghum, grain and corn across enormous acreages running up to the edge of the towns. A field in production is habitat. Harvest removes it in a matter of days and relocates everything living in it to whatever structures are nearest, at roughly the same point every year.
On top of those four, the oilfield economy adds a fifth in the southern half of the route: buildings that empty and refill on their own cycle, making vacancy a pest condition in its own right.
The West Texas pest year
Pressure here is strongly seasonal and more predictable than most people expect, which means it can be planned for rather than reacted to.
Late winter. The quietest stretch and the most useful. Exclusion work, perimeter establishment, lot clearing while vegetation is down, and termite inspection ahead of the local swarm. It is the least popular time to call and the easiest to get scheduled.
April and May. Termite swarm season for this region specifically — AgriLife notes South Texas swarms begin in January and February while Panhandle swarms do not occur until April and May. Ants become active, weeds move fast after any rain, and the first scorpion calls arrive.
Early summer. The heaviest general pest period. Ants, roaches, spiders, crickets, and scorpion activity climbing steadily. Mosquito pressure follows rain events rather than running continuously, because this country drains to playas and draws with no permanent streams.
July and August. Peak scorpion season and the busiest weeks of our year. Attics reach maximum temperature and the ground outside is at its driest, so both of the drivers AgriLife identifies push the same direction at once.
Late summer into harvest. Agricultural activity displaces rodents and field insects toward structures. Properties on the edge of town experience it as a sudden arrival at roughly the same point each year, which makes it the single most predictable pest event on the calendar.
Autumn. Rodent season proper, as the first cold nights move mice and rats indoors. Also cricket season, and a second scorpion mating period. Exclusion done in September is worth several visits in December.
Any week following real rain. Worth calling out separately because it cuts across the seasons. Rain floods harbourage and moves populations around, fills the containers and low ground that produce mosquitoes about a week to ten days later, and can put scorpions and ants somewhere they were not the week before. A property that had been quiet can produce a cluster of sightings within days of a storm, and that is behaviour rather than a new infestation.
Winter. Quieter, not empty. Rodents already inside stay inside and keep breeding in a warm building. It is the right period for the deliberate work — clearing, removal, and the structural fixes nobody wants to do in August.
How integrated pest management actually works
The phrase gets used loosely enough to be nearly meaningless in marketing, which is a shame, because as a working method it is exactly what these pages are built on.
It starts with identification — knowing precisely what you have, because everything downstream depends on it.
Then monitoring, which means establishing where the activity actually is rather than where it is being noticed. On scorpion work that is a UV survey after dark. On rodent work it is reading droppings, rub marks and gnaw damage. On termite work it is the foundation line and the penetrations.
Then the question of whether action is warranted at all. Some findings do not need treatment. A harvester ant colony out in a pasture, a single occasional invader, a desert termite working a fence post. Deciding not to treat is a legitimate outcome and it is part of the method rather than a failure of it.
Then non-chemical measures first. Exclusion, harbourage removal, moisture correction, sanitation, storage. On several of the pests that matter most here — scorpions, rodents, termites — these do more of the work than any product does, and AgriLife's own management guidance leads with them for exactly that reason.
Then targeted treatment where it is needed, aimed at the harbourage and the routes the monitoring identified, at label rate. The label in pesticide application is legally binding rather than advisory, and placement matters as much as product choice.
Then follow-up, to find out whether any of it worked — which is the step most often skipped, and the one that separates a job from a visit.
Texas takes this seriously enough to have written it into regulation: 4 TAC chapter 7 subchapter H carries an entire division on the integrated pest management programme for school districts, and continuing education for certified applicators requires general training that may cover IPM among laws, pesticide safety and environmental protection.
Why it matters commercially, and honestly. IPM produces smaller invoices than calendar spraying does. That is the whole tension in this industry, and it is worth naming rather than pretending it does not exist.
The library is complete, which is not the same as finished
Every species we set out to cover now has a page, and each of those pages was written to the same standard the rest of this site holds itself to — three thousand words of substance, sourced to Texas A&M AgriLife Extension and to state and federal health data, with the local application argued rather than assumed. There is no placeholder list here any more, which we are quietly pleased about, because a heading promising a reference over a set of stubs is worse than an honest gap.
What complete does not mean. It does not mean these pages are done being maintained. Several of them rest on figures that will move — quarantine boundaries, surveillance case counts, pesticide registrations, the wording of a CDC risk statement. Those sit in a register with a review interval attached to each one, and the build fails if a critical fact goes unverified past its interval. A reference page that nobody re-reads becomes wrong quietly, and quietly wrong is the worst way for a page like this to fail.
It also does not mean we covered everything that bites. There are plenty of insects out here we have not written about, and we will add them where we can do it honestly. The limiter has never been effort. It is whether there is real, checkable material about how a species behaves in this specific landscape — and for some of them there simply is not, which is itself worth saying out loud rather than papering over with generic content.
One structural note that shaped the whole library. There is no Texas A&M AgriLife structural pest guide for the High Plains or the Permian Basin as a distinct region — its regional publications here are agricultural. So the statewide material has to be read against local conditions, and nobody has published that reading. Doing it properly is why these pages took as long as they did, and it is why several of them stop and tell you where the sourcing runs out instead of continuing confidently past it.

Because out here a surprising share of calls turn out to be something harmless. Mud on a fence post is usually a desert termite rather than a structural threat. A bare circular mound with foraging trails is a harvester ant, which does not enter buildings. Getting that right saves the customer a treatment they never needed, and getting it wrong means the actual problem goes unaddressed while somebody sprays the wrong thing.
Where does the information on these pages come from?
Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, principally — its publications, its field guides, its urban entomology material and its extension entomologists. Where AgriLife and popular belief disagree, we say so and go with AgriLife. Where we could not find a source for a claim about this region specifically, we say that too rather than filling the gap.
Are Texas scorpions dangerous?
Not in the way people fear. AgriLife states that none of the scorpions in Texas are considered deadly and that stings produce only moderate reactions in most people. The genuinely dangerous species in the United States is the Arizona bark scorpion, which is a different animal from the striped bark scorpion you have in your garage. Stings hurt sharply and swelling can last days, and allergic reactions are possible — but lethality is not the concern.
Is it really too dry for termites here?
No, and no extension source supports that belief. AgriLife notes that the major populations are in coastal Texas but that termites are found throughout the state, and is explicit that where moisture is available they can be away from soil for extended periods — naming defective plumbing, leaky roofs, air conditioning condenser leaks and poorly maintained gutters. Landscape irrigation in dry country supplies exactly that.
Do I have fire ants?
It depends which county you are in, and the answer is genuinely different across our service area. AgriLife notes that fire ants infest the eastern two-thirds of Texas plus some urban areas in western Texas, and that western expansion depends largely on the availability of surface or ground water. In practice that means they are a Midland, Odessa, Big Spring and pockets-of-Lubbock problem far more than a Gaines, Yoakum, Terry, Dawson or Andrews one — where what you are looking at is almost always a harvester ant instead.
