Red imported fire ant
The red imported fire ant builds a dome of fluffy soil with no visible entrance, and its workers vary in size within one mound — which is how you tell it from a harvester ant. It is on the federal quarantine in Midland, Ector, Howard, Martin and Winkler counties and part of Lubbock County, and absent from the counties north and west of there.
Out here, the first question about a fire ant is whether it is one. The quarantine boundary runs straight through our service area, and it separates counties where this ant is genuinely present from counties where the animal in the yard is almost certainly a red harvester ant instead.
Getting that wrong costs money in both directions. Treating harvester ants as fire ants removes a native species that is not bothering anybody. Treating fire ants as harvester ants means using the wrong method on an animal that will simply rebuild.
So this page starts with identification, then covers the biology that explains why they behave as they do, and then handles the sting — including two widely repeated numbers that do not mean what people think they mean.
Identification, in the order the checks are useful
Size variation within one mound is the giveaway. Fire ant workers are polymorphic — in a single colony they range continuously from very small to noticeably larger. Published sizes differ a little between sources, somewhere in the span of a sixteenth to a quarter of an inch, dark brown. The point is not the absolute size but the variation. Harvester ants are all one size, and that difference is visible without a lens.
The mound has no door. A fire ant mound is a dome of loose worked soil, in bad cases up to eighteen inches tall, with no visible entrance anywhere on it. The ants leave and return through tunnels that radiate outward underground and surface some distance away. If you are looking at a crater with an obvious hole in the middle, you are not looking at a fire ant mound.
Disturb it and see what happens — carefully, with shoes on. Fire ants respond to a disturbed mound by pouring out within seconds and running up whatever is touching it. That aggressive, immediate defence is characteristic and it is the reason most people get stung several times at once rather than once.
Under a lens: ten antennal segments ending in a two-segmented club, and two nodes on the petiole between thorax and abdomen. Fire ants lack the pair of spines on the rear of the thorax that harvester ants carry, and they have nothing resembling the row of hairs beneath the head that harvester ants use for carrying soil and seed.
And the timing tell. Harvester ants shut down foraging around the middle of a summer day as humidity drops. Fire ants do not follow that pattern in the same way, so heavy activity at noon in August points away from harvester ants.
The biology that explains the frustration
People find fire ants uniquely maddening to deal with, and the reasons are all in the life cycle rather than in the products.
They rebuild fast because they develop fast. Eggs hatch in eight to ten days, larvae pass through four stages, and development takes roughly twenty-two to thirty-seven days depending on temperature — about a month from egg to adult. A queen lays in the region of two hundred eggs a day. Workers live about five weeks; the queen can live seven years or more.
A mature colony is far larger than the mound implies. Well over a hundred thousand workers is normal, and published figures run considerably higher. The visible dome is a climate-control structure, not the colony.
There are two social forms, and they behave completely differently. Single-queen colonies are territorial: workers from one mound fight workers from another, which limits density to roughly forty to a hundred and fifty mounds per acre. Multiple-queen colonies are not territorial, so mounds interconnect and density climbs to two hundred or more per acre — extension figures for multi-queen areas run as high as two hundred to eight hundred colonies per acre. If a property looks impossibly infested, that is usually the explanation.
They recolonise from beyond your fence. Mating flights happen in the afternoon soon after rain, most commonly spring and autumn, and a mated female can fly for miles before landing. This is why treating individual mounds one at a time is a treadmill: the property is being reseeded from a catchment far larger than the property.
And they are not purely a nuisance. Fire ants are omnivorous, but their primary diet is insects and other invertebrates, and they measurably suppress ticks, chiggers and caterpillars. They also tend aphids for honeydew, which is one route by which an ant problem becomes a plant problem. None of that argues against controlling them where they are a hazard — it is just worth knowing that the picture is not entirely one-sided.
The sting, and two numbers that get misread
What actually happens. The ant bites first, holding on with its jaws, and then stings — which is why the marks often come in a small ring. AgriLife describes the course precisely: the site hurts for a few minutes and then reddens, swelling into a bump or hive within about twenty minutes. Within several hours to a day, most people develop a white fluid-filled pustule that is characteristic of this ant and of very little else.
That pustule is sterile. AgriLife notes that sting sites rarely become infected and that preventive antibiotics are therefore not routinely required. Leaving it intact rather than opening it is the sensible course; scratching it open is how the rare infection actually happens.
Now the first misread number: anaphylaxis. We are going to report this the honest way, which is to say the sources contradict each other. One AgriLife publication states in one passage that anaphylaxis occurs in 0.6 to 6 percent of people who are stung, and in another passage within the same document that severe allergic reactions occur in less than 1 percent. Texas A&M's dedicated fire ant site gives around 1 percent. The defensible summary is that severe reactions are uncommon, published estimates span under 1 percent to 6 percent, and the authorities are not consistent. Anyone who has previously reacted badly to a sting of any kind should be talking to a doctor rather than reading this.
And the second: the death toll. AgriLife records that anaphylactic reactions to fire ants have caused more than eighty deaths. That is a cumulative national figure with no period attached — not an annual rate — and it is regularly quoted as though it were yearly. For scale, published emergency medicine work puts all stinging insect deaths in the United States at roughly thirty to forty per year across every species, with wasps and bees accounting for most of them.
Where genuine caution belongs. Infants and small children who cannot move away from a disturbed mound, anyone with impaired mobility, sleeping or confined animals, and anyone with a known sting allergy. A documented fatality involved a three-month-old infant who received hundreds of stings. That is the shape of the real risk — mass stinging of someone who cannot get clear — rather than a single sting in a healthy adult.
The quarantine, and what it means for you
The federal imported fire ant regulated-areas list, published under 7 C.F.R. §301.81-3 and adopted into Texas law by reference at 4 TAC §19.101, is what actually settles whether your county is inside the line. We read it directly rather than repeating a summary.

Part of Lubbock County — and the listing draws the boundary street by street, covering the portion of the city bounded by Highway 27 to the east, Ursuline Street to the north, Milwaukee Street to the west and 98th Street to the south.
Outside: Gaines, Yoakum, Terry, Dawson and Andrews counties are not listed.
What the quarantine actually regulates is movement, not the ant. If you are moving soil, sod, nursery stock, baled hay that has been stored on the ground, or used soil-moving equipment out of a regulated county into one that is not regulated, the rules apply to you. That is a live consideration in a region where a great deal of soil, sod and equipment moves between counties — landscapers, contractors, anybody hauling fill north out of the Basin.
And the list is amended without announcement. The federal list changes county by county, and Texas adopts whatever is current rather than naming counties in its own rule. So the live list governs, not this page. We re-read it on a schedule and we say when we last did — but for any decision that matters, check the current list yourself.

What actually works, and what does not
Identify first. It is the whole reason this page exists. Fire ant products applied to harvester ants remove a native species that horned lizards depend on — and AgriLife records that fire ant products frequently kill harvester ants more effectively than they kill fire ants.
Individual mound treatment is a treadmill on its own. Because the property is reseeded from mated queens flying in from well beyond the fence, killing the mounds you can see buys weeks rather than seasons. It is worth doing where a specific mound is a hazard — beside a door, in a play area, in a pen — and it is not a programme.
Baiting works with the biology rather than against it. Foragers carry bait back and it reaches the queen, which is the only part of the colony whose loss actually matters. Baits are slower than a drench and people frequently give up on them too early, which is worth knowing before you start.
Timing matters more than product. Bait works when ants are actively foraging, which in a West Texas summer means early morning or evening rather than the middle of a hot dry afternoon. A simple test: put a small amount of something greasy on a card near a mound and see whether they find it within half an hour. If they do not, it is the wrong time to bait.
What does not work. Pouring boiling water, petrol, bleach or various household chemicals into a mound. These circulate perennially, they are dangerous, several are illegal, and they generally relocate the colony a few metres rather than killing it. If a mound simply moves after treatment, it usually was not killed.
And the honest limit. On acreage, eradication is not the goal and nobody credible will promise it. Suppression around the areas people and animals actually use is achievable and worth paying for. Beyond that boundary, the ants are part of the landscape.
Where they cause trouble that is not about stings
Most people think of fire ants as a stinging problem in a lawn. In this region a good deal of the actual damage happens elsewhere.
Electrical equipment. Fire ants are drawn to electrical fields and turn up inside irrigation controllers, pump panels, air-conditioning units, well-house wiring, traffic signal boxes and meter enclosures. They pack the housing with soil and debris, and the failure usually presents as an electrical fault rather than as an ant problem. On a property with irrigation and outbuildings, that is frequently the expensive part.
Livestock and young animals. Anything that cannot move away from a disturbed mound is at real risk — newborn animals, penned animals, sitting poultry. This is the situation where mass stinging genuinely matters, as opposed to a single sting on an adult.
Equipment and gardens. Mounds in a hay meadow damage cutting equipment. Mounds in a garden make routine work unpleasant. And the aphid-tending habit means an ant problem in ornamentals often shows up first as a plant problem.
New ground before established ground. Freshly graded, newly sodded and newly irrigated land is easier for them to colonise than mature landscape, because there is no incumbent ant population holding the territory. In a region with as much new construction as the Permian Basin, that is why new subdivisions frequently have them before the older streets nearby do.
And a note for anyone hauling. Because the quarantine regulates the movement of soil, sod, nursery stock, hay stored on the ground and used soil-moving equipment, a contractor working across county lines is inside the rules whether or not anybody mentioned it at the job. It is worth knowing which side of the line each site is on.
Fire ant questions
Do I actually have fire ants, or is it a harvester ant?
Two checks settle it. Look at the workers: fire ant workers within a single mound vary continuously from very small to noticeably larger, while every worker in a harvester ant colony is the same size. Then look at the mound: a fire ant mound is a dome of fluffy worked soil with no central opening, because the ants travel through tunnels that radiate underground and surface away from it. A harvester ant nest has an obvious hole in the middle of a bare circle, usually with small pebbles around it. And behaviour: disturb a fire ant mound and workers pour out within seconds, which harvester ants do not do.
Which counties around here actually have them?
Midland, Ector, Howard, Martin and Winkler counties are on the federal imported fire ant regulated-areas list under 7 C.F.R. section 301.81-3, which Texas adopts by reference at 4 TAC section 19.101. Part of Lubbock County is listed — specifically the portion of the city bounded by Highway 27 to the east, Ursuline Street to the north, Milwaukee Street to the west and 98th Street to the south. Gaines, Yoakum, Terry, Dawson and Andrews are not listed at all. So in Midland, Odessa, Big Spring, Stanton and Kermit fire ants are a genuine possibility, and in Seminole, Seagraves, Denver City, Brownfield and Lamesa the suspect is nearly always something else.

So a fresh crop of small mounds appearing across a property a week or two after a storm is the normal pattern rather than an invasion. It also means a property can be recolonised from well beyond its own boundary, which is why treating a single mound rarely settles anything for long.
How many are in a mound?
More than the mound suggests. A mature colony holds well over a hundred thousand workers, with a queen laying in the region of two hundred eggs a day. Development from egg to adult runs about thirty days depending on temperature. That second form is why some properties have a density that seems impossible.
Do they come inside?
Sometimes, and this is one of the practical differences from harvester ants. AgriLife notes that fire ant colonies occasionally occur indoors and in structures. So ants coming into a building in a quarantined county are worth identifying properly rather than assuming they are something ordinary.
