Norway rat and roof rat
Two rats with opposite habits: the Norway rat burrows at ground level and the roof rat nests overhead. Which one you have decides where traps go and where you seal — and out here the Norway rat is the documented species, with the roof rat associated with East Texas and the Gulf Coast rather than the Llano Estacado.
These are two animals with opposite habits sharing one word, and getting them confused puts the whole job in the wrong half of the building.
The Norway rat is a burrower. It works at ground level and below — foundations, slab edges, woodpiles, rubbish, the base of outbuildings.
The roof rat works overhead. Attics, ceiling and wall voids, rafters, and the trees and dense vegetation around a building, entering near the roofline.
And there is a distribution question we are going to answer honestly rather than conveniently. We could not find a source placing established roof rat populations in this part of Texas. The Norway rat is the documented commensal rat here. That does not mean a roof rat never turns up — it means we are not going to tell you they are established when we cannot cite it.
Which species is actually here
The Norway rat is well documented across the state and the country. The national wildlife damage handbook records it throughout the contiguous forty-eight states, generally at lower elevations but occurring wherever people live. Texas sources describe it as widespread in Texas. There is no ambiguity about whether it is here.
The roof rat is a different picture, and the sources disagree. The national handbook is explicit that roof rats range along the lower East Coast, through the Gulf States up into Arkansas and along the Pacific Coast, and states that most of the interior of the United States is free of roof rats, with isolated infestations usually stemming from infested cargo shipments. Texas A&M's own extension writing describes them as quite common in urban communities in East Texas and throughout the south.
One Texas reference is broader — a mammal survey describing the species as common over most of Texas, especially in towns — but it gives no regional or county breakdown, and we found no county-level record, survey or extension publication placing established populations in Lubbock, Amarillo, Midland, Odessa or the counties around them.
So here is the editorial position, stated plainly. We treat the Norway rat as the default commensal rat of this region. We describe the roof rat as the species associated with East Texas, the Gulf Coast and the South, which may turn up locally in a structure but which we cannot show is widely established here.
And then we let the property decide. Elevated droppings, runways along rafters, gnawing high in the structure and entry near the roofline point to a roof rat regardless of what a distribution map says. Burrows along foundations, activity at slab level and low-wall gnawing point to a Norway rat. The evidence on the job outranks the general case, in both directions.
One local habitat note worth having. The Texas mammal literature associates roof rats with cotton gins and the grain warehouses attached to them — which is the one genuinely Llano Estacado-relevant mention we found in a priority source, and worth knowing if your problem is in that kind of building rather than a house.
Telling them apart
The tail is the best single character. Lay the tail alongside the body: a Norway rat's tail is shorter than its head and body combined, and a roof rat's is longer. One Texas source qualifies that as usually rather than always, so treat it as strong evidence rather than proof.
Then the ears. Fold an ear forward toward the eye. On a roof rat it is long enough to reach; on a Norway rat it is not.
Then build and muzzle. The Norway rat is large and robust with a blunt muzzle, seven to eighteen ounces, with a mostly grey belly. The roof rat is sleek and agile with a pointed muzzle, five to ten ounces, with a belly ranging from grey to white.
And a rule we are declining to give you. You will read everywhere that Norway rat droppings have blunt ends and roof rat droppings have pointed ends. We could not verify it in any authoritative source — not in the AgriLife material, not in the national wildlife damage handbook, not in the university IPM guidance. Every source we found asserting it was a commercial pest control blog. What is documented is that Norway rat droppings run up to about three-quarters of an inch long and a quarter inch across, and that fresh ones are soft.
What actually discriminates the species is location, not shape. Droppings along a foundation, behind ground-level clutter, at the base of a wall — Norway rat. Droppings on a rafter, on top of a beam, in an attic, on a shelf — roof rat. That distinction is free, reliable and requires no expertise.
Two nesting habits, two completely different jobs
Norway rats work at grade. They are burrowers, with burrows found along building foundations, beneath rubbish and woodpiles. They dwell in basements and on ground floors, and the Texas literature places them in feed stores, chicken houses and dumps, with burrows under sidewalks and outbuildings. Nests are below-ground or at ground level, lined with shredded paper, cloth or other fibrous material.
They do still climb, and this catches people out. The same source notes Norway rats traversing telephone wires between buildings. Ground level is a strong preference, not a limit — so an attic problem is not automatically a roof rat.
Roof rats work aloft. They live and nest above ground in shrubs, trees and dense vegetation, and inside structures they favour enclosed elevated spaces — attics, wall voids, ceiling voids and cabinets. They enter mostly near the roofline, and on farms the Texas literature places them in attics, rafters and crossbeams.
Which means the trap placement rules are different. For Norway rats, traps go against walls in dark corners where droppings are, positioned at right angles to the wall with the trigger end nearly touching it. The reason is behavioural: AgriLife's rodent training describes rats as thigmophilic — touch-loving, travelling in contact with a surface — and negatively phototropic, avoiding light. A trap in the open middle of a floor is a trap in a place a rat has no intention of going.
For roof rats, traps go at ground level and aloft. Ledges, shelves, branches, fences, pipes and overhead beams. AgriLife's attic guidance is to place snap traps wherever you find droppings, usually along rafters or next to stored boxes.
And the sealing follows the same split. Norway rats: seal at grade — foundation gaps, slab edges, utility penetrations, door sweeps, garage door corners. Roof rats: seal at height — roofline, soffit and fascia junctions, vent and flashing gaps — and treat overhanging tree limbs as an access route to be cut back rather than as landscaping.
The numbers behind the frustration
Norway rats: four to six litters a year, six to twelve young per litter with averages given around seven or eight, gestation of twenty-one to twenty-three days, and sexual maturity at about three months. A female can successfully wean twenty or more offspring in a year. There is no delimited breeding season, though reproduction slows in autumn and winter and peaks in spring and autumn.
Roof rats: three to five litters, four to eight young, gestation around twenty-one days, maturity at two to three months.
Lifespan is worth stating carefully, because sources differ. AgriLife's rodent course gives field figures of five to twelve months for a Norway rat and five to eighteen months for a roof rat. A Texas mammal reference reports two to three years for the Norway rat. Those reconcile as field lifespan against maximum potential, and for a homeowner the field figures are the honest ones — most wild rats do not live anything like their maximum.
Home range explains where to look. A Norway rat typically travels an area roughly a hundred to a hundred and fifty feet across and seldom goes further than about three hundred feet from its burrow. Roof rats routinely travel three hundred feet or more for food. Either way, the source is closer than people assume.
Diet differs and it points at the harbourage. Norway rats prefer cereal grains, meat, fish, nuts and some fruit. Roof rats prefer fruit, tree nuts, berries, slugs, snails, young birds and eggs — which is why a roof rat problem so often traces back to a fruit tree, a nut tree or a bird feeder rather than to anything in the kitchen.
Disease, with two corrections
The documented list. The wildlife damage handbook names murine typhus, leptospirosis, trichinosis, salmonellosis and rat-bite fever for the Norway rat, with plague added for the roof rat. That is a real list and rats are worth keeping out of a building on those grounds alone.
Correction one: typhus is not a West Texas disease on the published evidence. Texas DSHS records more than 8,600 flea-borne typhus cases between 2008 and 2025, ranging from a low of 135 in 2010 to a high of 1,110 in 2025, with roughly 72 percent of cases hospitalised and seventeen deaths across the whole period. Those are serious numbers. But DSHS is specific about where they occur: most Texas cases are in South Texas from Nueces County southward to the Rio Grande Valley, with newer endemic areas around Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Bexar and Travis counties. West Texas is not identified as a focus.
Correction two: rats are not the hantavirus animal people mean. The hantavirus that causes pulmonary syndrome in the United States is spread by the deer mouse — we cover that on the house mouse page, and it matters here because this region carries a disproportionate share of Texas cases. There is a rat-associated hantavirus, Seoul virus, carried by Norway rats, but the CDC notes transmission to humans is rare. In a 2017 outbreak traced to pet rats, seventeen people showed evidence of recent infection, eight had a febrile illness, three were hospitalised and there were no deaths.
The structural case is usually the stronger one anyway. Rats gnaw wiring, with the potential to start a fire — that is stated plainly in the AgriLife material and it is the risk most likely to actually cost somebody. On agricultural property the other figure worth having is consumption and spoilage: each rat eats roughly twenty to forty pounds of feed a year and probably contaminates around ten times that amount.
What works
Seal everything over a quarter of an inch. That is the stricter standard, and it is the right one because it excludes mice as well. For scale on rats specifically: AgriLife notes a roof rat can enter through a gap under a door as narrow as half an inch, or a hole the size of a quarter.
The entry points that come up repeatedly are gaps around the garage door, roof venting and flashing, and ground-level gaps under and around siding — which is a neat summary of the two-species split in one sentence.
Materials matter. Cement, brass or stainless steel wool, and purpose-made exclusion products. AgriLife does mention low-expansion foam with an explicit caution not to use too much — and as the house mouse page sets out, foam alone is not a barrier for rodents. It belongs behind metal, not instead of it.
Trap density, and the number nobody likes. AgriLife's guidance is to triple the number of traps you think you need and keep them freshly baited. Rats are wary of new objects, so a thin trap line produces nothing for several days and then never catches up with a breeding rate of twenty or more weaned young a year. Under-trapping is the single most common reason a do-it-yourself rat job stalls.
What does not work. University IPM guidance states that frightening devices, including high frequency and ultrasonic sounds, are ineffective for controlling rats, and that no repellent has been found to solve a rat problem for more than a very short time.
And the same principle as every other rodent on this site. Trapping and baiting deal with the population present; only exclusion changes what the building can support. A rat quote with no sealing work in it is a subscription, not a solution — and on this species, with the wiring risk attached, that distinction is worth pressing.

So: the Norway rat is the documented commensal rat here, and if the evidence on your property says roof rat, we will work the job that way rather than argue with it.
Why does it matter which one I have?
Because they live at opposite ends of the building and the work goes in different places. Norway rats burrow — along foundations, under woodpiles and rubbish, in basements and at ground level — so traps go against walls at grade and sealing concentrates on foundation gaps, slab edges, utility penetrations and garage door corners. Roof rats nest in attics, wall and ceiling voids, cabinets, and in trees and dense vegetation, entering mostly near the roofline — so traps go aloft as well as at ground level, and sealing concentrates on the roofline, soffits, vents and flashing. Doing Norway rat work on a roof rat problem is a lot of effort in the wrong half of the building.
Is the pointed-versus-blunt droppings rule real?
We could not verify it, so we are not going to repeat it. The idea that Norway rat droppings have rounded ends and roof rat droppings pointed ones is everywhere in pest control marketing, but it does not appear in the AgriLife material, the national wildlife damage handbook or the university IPM guidance we checked — every source we found stating it was a commercial blog. What is documented is the size of Norway rat droppings, up to about three-quarters of an inch long. And what actually discriminates the species in practice is where the droppings are: along a foundation at floor level, or up on a rafter.
Do rats carry hantavirus?
Not the one people mean. The hantavirus that causes pulmonary syndrome in the United States is spread by the deer mouse, not by rats.
