Still fleas, after the pet was treated

The cocoon is the answer. Texas A&M states that the flea pupa is well protected from pesticide sprays and very difficult to kill, and that fleas in the pupal stage when insecticides are applied frequently survive to emerge days later. Kentucky’s extension service sets the expectation directly: after treatment, expect to see some fleas for a few weeks or longer. Past four weeks is when retreatment becomes the question.

This is the call that makes people lose faith in pest control, and almost always for a reason that has nothing to do with the quality of the work. The pet was treated. The house was treated. Ten days later somebody gets bitten in the front room, and the obvious conclusion is that somebody was sold something that did not work.

The actual explanation is a life stage. Texas A&M states that the flea pupa is normally well protected from the effects of pesticide sprays and is very difficult to kill with insecticides, and that fleas in the pupal stage when insecticides are applied frequently survive treatment to emerge several days later. Kentucky's extension service is even shorter about it: the cocoon is impervious to insecticides.

So a correct treatment does not end the problem on the day it happens, and any company that lets you believe otherwise has set you up to be disappointed. Kentucky publishes the expectation instead: after treatment, expect to see some fleas for a few weeks or longer.

The cocoon, which is the whole story

What the pupa actually is. A larva spins a cocoon and completes development inside it. The adult flea forms within that case and then — this is the important part — waits. It does not emerge on a timer. It emerges on a signal.

Why insecticide does not reach it. The cocoon is a physical barrier. The CDC states that it protects the pupa from environmental conditions and from insecticides and repellents for several days or weeks. Texas A&M's own wording is that the pupa is normally well protected from the effects of pesticide sprays and very difficult to kill. Kentucky's is that the cocoon is impervious to them.

How long it can wait, with the sources disagreeing openly. Texas A&M gives the pupal stage as normally seven to fourteen days but able to persist much longer under certain conditions. Kentucky's pesticide programme gives two to four weeks, sometimes longer. Florida gives five days to five weeks in the absence of hosts. Oklahoma State says pre-emerged adults can lie dormant for 140 to 170 days. Texas A&M's livestock entomology group says they can remain in an abandoned room, barn or facility for up to five months. UC IPM says that at cool temperatures, fully formed fleas can remain in their cocoons for up to twelve months.

We are not going to average those. Two weeks is the typical figure and it is the one to plan around. The long figures are real, they come from good sources, and they explain the cases that otherwise look impossible — a house shut up for the summer, a rent house that stood empty, a barn nobody has used since spring.

What triggers emergence. A host. The CDC states that adults will not emerge until there is a clear presence of one, such as movement or body heat. UC IPM names warm temperatures and the mechanical pressure of walking on or vacuuming carpet. Ohio State lists vibrations from pets and people, pressure from an animal lying on them, heat, noise and carbon dioxide. Texas A&M's livestock group specifies carbon dioxide released by a host.

Which explains the most alarming version of this. A property that has been empty — a rental between tenants, a house after a death in the family, a place shut up while somebody worked away — can produce a wave of fleas within minutes of somebody walking in. Nothing hatched because of the visit; a population of fully formed adults had been waiting for exactly that cue.

Where the population actually is

Not mostly on the animal. Kentucky describes adult fleas laying forty to fifty eggs a day in the pet's fur, with hundreds or thousands of eggs, larvae and pupae elsewhere in the home or yard. The eggs are not sticky and they fall off wherever the animal goes.

A note on a number you will see everywhere. There is a very widely quoted claim that only five percent of a flea population is adults and ninety-five percent is other stages. We went looking for it in eleven extension and public health sources and could not find it in any of them. What does exist is a different, spatial statement — that ninety-five percent of an infestation is in five percent of the house or yard — which we suspect is where the confusion started. We are not going to repeat a statistic we cannot source, even a convenient one.

What is well supported is the concentration. The population is where the animal rests, not where it walks. The dog's bed, the spot under the coffee table, the shaded patch by the back step, the gap under the porch, the cat's chair. That is where eggs fall, where larvae find the organic debris they need, and where cocoons end up.

The species, briefly. It is almost certainly the cat flea regardless of what animal you own — UC IPM calls it the most common ectoparasite on domestic cats and dogs, and Texas A&M's livestock entomologists list its hosts as cats, humans, domestic dogs, several livestock species, opossums and raccoons. That last part matters more than it looks: the same insect on your dog is at home on the wildlife crossing your yard at night.

Vacuuming, which is a treatment step and not housework

It provokes the stage that cannot be sprayed. Kentucky states that vacuuming stimulates pre-adult fleas to emerge sooner from their insecticide-resistant cocoons, hastening their contact with insecticide residues. UC IPM says the same, describing vacuuming as effective at killing larvae in carpet, picking up adults, and stimulating pre-emerged adults to leave their cocoons.

So the timing is deliberate. Vacuum before the treatment, and keep vacuuming afterwards. You are trying to bring the protected stage out into an environment that will kill it. Utah State's guidance makes the same point — that the vibration triggers emergence and should be done prior to insecticide application.

How much it removes on its own. The sources conflict. AgriLife gives 15 to 30 percent of larvae and 30 to 60 percent of flea eggs from carpeting with a good beater-type vacuum. Ohio State says frequent vacuuming has been shown to remove up to 95 percent of flea eggs, some larvae and adults. UC IPM calls it very effective without a number. We quote AgriLife's figure because it is the most conservative and the most specific, and we are telling you the others exist.

Do it where it counts. The resting places, under furniture, along edges and skirting, and the pet's bedding — which is worth washing hot rather than vacuuming. A general pass over the middle of open floor is the least productive version of this.

And keep doing it. Every day or two through the emergence window is the useful cadence, not once on treatment day. The whole point is that the population is arriving in instalments over several weeks.

The yard, and why most of it does not need treating

Sunlight is lethal to the immature stages. Oklahoma State states that open areas of lawn exposed to continuous sunlight will not support flea development, but shady moist areas will. UC IPM says larvae are unlikely to survive where there is sun exposure or substantial foot traffic.

Which makes blanket yard spraying poor value. Georgia's extension service says it outright: since larvae prefer shaded areas with high humidity and limited air movement, spraying the entire yard is wasteful. AgriLife's guidance is to focus outdoor treatment on crawl spaces, bedding areas, sites under decks and shrubbery, and shady areas where pets spend a lot of time.

In this climate that narrows things down sharply. An open West Texas lawn in July, in full sun, with humidity in the teens, is about as hostile an environment as a flea larva could be given. The habitat here is specific and small: under the porch, under the deck, the shaded north side of the house, the crawl space, the dog run under a tree, the gap behind the shed, the shaded patch where the animal actually lies down.

Sometimes no outdoor treatment is needed at all. UC IPM notes that treating the pet with any of the preferred products normally will prevent reinfestation. That is worth knowing before anybody quotes you a yard programme.

The reservoir question. UC IPM notes feral cats, opossums, squirrels and coyotes can carry fleas and advises limiting food, water and shelter for them. Texas DSHS makes the same point in the context of disease, advising that yards be kept so that rodents, opossums and stray cats cannot live there. On acreage and on the edge of these towns, that outside reservoir is often the reason a house keeps being re-seeded after everything indoors was done correctly.

Disease, kept in proportion

Flea-borne typhus is real and it is increasing in Texas. DSHS reports over 8,600 cases between 2008 and 2025, with a low of 135 in 2010 and a high of 1,110 in 2025. Approximately 72 percent of cases were hospitalised, and 17 deaths have been attributed to the disease. Symptoms are fever, headache, chills, weakness, nausea and vomiting, body aches and rash, with an incubation period of six to fourteen days.

And it is not happening here. DSHS describes most Texas cases occurring in South Texas, from Nueces County southward to the Rio Grande Valley, with newer endemic areas emerging in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex, greater Houston, Bexar and Travis counties. In the DSHS county table covering 2008 to 2019, the only West Texas county appearing at all is El Paso, with a single case in 2013. The highest-burden counties in that same table are Hidalgo with 1,053, Nueces with 667, Bexar with 425 and Cameron with 388.

Why we are publishing both halves. A pest control company quoting the 8,600 and stopping there would be doing something we think is dishonest. The disease is worth knowing about — particularly if you travel to South Texas, or if somebody in the house has a fever and a rash that nobody can place — and it is not a reason to be frightened of a flea on the Llano Estacado.

One mechanism worth understanding. The CDC explains that fleas defecate when they feed, that this flea dirt contains the bacteria, and that it can be rubbed into the bite wound or another wound and cause infection. So transmission is not really the bite — it is the scratching afterwards. That is a genuinely useful thing to know and it is not what most people assume.

What we will tell you before we start

That you will still see fleas. Kentucky's expectation — a few weeks or longer — is what we will say up front rather than after you ring back annoyed. Every one you see in that window is a newly emerged adult from a cocoon that nothing could have reached.

That four weeks is the threshold. Kentucky puts retreatment on the table when fleas continue appearing beyond four weeks. That is a specific, published line, and it is the one we work to rather than an arbitrary schedule.

That the pet's treatment is your vet's business, not ours. The animal has to be on something appropriate and it has to stay on it, and that conversation belongs to somebody qualified to have it. A house treatment against an untreated animal is a losing arrangement and we will say so rather than take the work.

That the vacuuming is genuinely part of the treatment. Not an afterthought and not tidying — it is the step that brings the protected stage out where the treatment can act on it.

Which flea is it?

Almost certainly the cat flea, whatever animal you have. UC IPM describes Ctenocephalides felis as the most common ectoparasite on domestic cats and dogs. AgriLife notes adult cat fleas feed on dogs, cats and a variety of furred animals, and Texas A&M’s livestock entomology group lists cats, humans, domestic dogs, several livestock species, opossums and raccoons. So a dog-only household with fleas does not have a different insect, and that broad host range is also the reason a treated house can be re-seeded from outside.

Can fleas make people ill here?

There is a real flea-borne disease in Texas, and this region is not where it is happening — both halves of that matter.
