German cockroaches in a house that is genuinely clean

German cockroaches arrive as cargo, not as a verdict on your housekeeping. NC State states that even with the most stringent cleaning regimen and regular pest management, they can still find their way into a structure. What cleaning changes is whether an arrival establishes — and the food scale that matters is crumbs caught in a crack, not dishes in a sink.

This is one of the few pest problems that arrives carrying an accusation. People apologise to us on the doorstep. They tidy before we get there. They tell us, unprompted and often twice, that the house is normally spotless — and quite frequently it visibly is.

So we want to put the sourced position first, before anything else on this page. NC State Extension, in a 2025 publication, states that even with the most stringent cleaning regimen and despite regular pest management, German cockroaches can still find their way into your structure. AgriLife's own account of how they arrive is a single unglamorous sentence: cockroaches can infest homes when brought in with groceries or boxes.

That is the answer to how they got in. It is not about you. What the rest of this page is about is the more useful question — given that they are in, what is actually keeping them, and what changes it.

Arriving and establishing are two different questions

This distinction does all the work, so it is worth being precise about it. One question is how a cockroach gets through your front door. A completely different question is whether the ones that got in survive, breed and become a hundred. Housekeeping has almost nothing to do with the first and a good deal to do with the second.

On arrival, the literature is unambiguous. NC State describes the mechanism as hitchhiking, and defines it as the introduction of pests into a previously uninfested structure through contact with, or acquisition of, previously infested material or products. UC IPM tells you where to look: items brought into the building, especially appliances, furniture, boxes, and things that were recently in storage. Penn State says it is difficult to keep cockroaches from entering homes via boxes, grocery bags, suitcases and the like.

Notice what is not on any of those lists. Dirty dishes. Bins. Floors. The things people flagellate themselves about are absent, because the sources are describing a transport problem, not a hygiene one.

And notice what the sources do say about sanitation, because we are not going to quote them selectively. AgriLife states that good cleanup and sanitation practices are essential to effective cockroach control. Penn State calls sanitation a key factor in prevention and gets specific — clean up spilled food including crumbs on the floor, do not leave dirty dishes overnight.

Both of those things are true at once. Cleaning is a control lever. It is not the cause of introduction. Any page that tells you cleanliness has nothing to do with cockroaches is overstating a real point until it stops being true, and that is not a favour to anybody.

The scale of food that actually matters

Here is the sentence that reframes a clean kitchen. UC IPM: even tiny amounts of crumbs or liquids caught between cracks provide a food source. Not a plate. Not a bin. Crumbs, in cracks.

Which changes where you would look. The seam where a worktop meets the splashback. The gap under a toe-kick. The greasy film on the wall behind a cooker, and the trough of crumbs under the hob. Under and behind the fridge, where a condensation drip and a warm motor sit together. The void beside a dishwasher. Inside the cabinet under a sink, where a slow compression fitting has been damp for two years.

None of that is reachable on a normal clean. Some of it is not reachable at all without pulling an appliance out. So a household can be doing everything right by any ordinary standard and still be supplying a population, which is precisely why the accusation people bring to the door is unfair.

Warmth and moisture are the other half. AgriLife states that cockroaches congregate near sources of heat and moisture, which accelerate their growth and reproductive rates. That is not just about where they hide — it is about how fast the problem compounds. Populations behind a warm appliance develop faster than populations in a cool cupboard.

And the harbourage itself is physical, not dirty. UC IPM describes cockroaches hiding in dark, warm areas, especially narrow spaces where surfaces touch them on both sides. They want contact on the back and the front at once. A hairline gap behind a loose piece of trim qualifies; an open shelf does not. This is why the fix is so often carpentry and caulk rather than chemical.

The corollary for the West Texas housing stock. A dry climate does not mean a dry building. The moisture is indoors and it is local: a sink trap, an evaporative cooler line, a water heater pan, a fridge drip tray, a slow supply fitting nobody has looked at. In a region where the humidity outside is often in the teens, those interior wet spots are exactly where a moisture-dependent insect concentrates, which makes them the highest-value place to look.

The apartment problem, with the actual data

Where the evidence comes from. A team studied a 188-unit high-rise apartment building and tracked cockroach infestation across it while running a building-wide programme. At the start, 49 percent of the building was infested — 23 units heavily, 25 medium, 42 light. At six months that was 24 percent. At twelve months, 12 percent.

The finding that matters for a tenant. At month zero, infestations within the building were spatially correlated — infested units sat next to, above and below other infested units at a rate above chance. Across a hallway, the number of both-infested pairs came out at 36.4 observed against 24.0 expected. After twelve months of building-wide work, only correlation across floors remained, which the authors interpret as the programme having reduced dispersal between units as well as clearing individual ones.

A companion study puts a number on the difference in approach. Building-wide integrated management achieved a 75 percent reduction in infested apartments; a control building receiving conventional monthly pest control achieved 39 percent.

Now the honest part. Nowhere in that literature does anyone write the sentence "unit-by-unit treatment fails". What is published is the clustering, and the 75 against 39. The conclusion we draw — that treating one flat while the neighbours go untreated means fighting a resupply — is an inference. We think it is a sound one and we act on it. We are still going to label it as our reasoning rather than dress it up as a citation.

One practical detail from the same study. Traps placed by the stove and the refrigerator caught significantly more cockroaches than traps under the kitchen sink or in the bathroom. If you are monitoring your own unit, that is where the monitors go.

What this means in Odessa, Midland, Lubbock and Andrews. Plenty of the rental stock here is exactly this shape — shared walls, shared plumbing chases, a common laundry. NC State notes cockroaches moving through shared walls between residential or commercial units, driven by resource depletion, overcrowding or simple exploration. If you are a tenant, the single most useful thing you can do is tell the manager, because a building-level response is worth more than anything happening inside your four walls.

How fast it moves, with the sources disagreeing in public

We are going to show you the disagreement rather than pick a number. Reference pages usually present one clean figure. The clean figure does not exist here.

Eggs per case. NC State gives a mean of 40. Penn State gives up to 48, usually 30 to 48. UC IPM says about 30. AgriLife's publication gives 12 to 36 — but that figure is explicitly generic across cockroach species, so it should not be quoted as a German cockroach number, and we are noting that because it gets misquoted that way constantly.

Egg cases per female. NC State: five to eight, totalling 200 to 250 eggs in a lifetime. Penn State: four to eight. Those agree well enough.

Time from egg to adult. AgriLife says 50 to 60 days at average indoor temperatures. NC State says 70 to 100 days. That gap is real and neither source is careless; they are likely measuring under different conditions, and temperature drives development.

Annual output. Penn State calculates over 10,000 descendants in a year assuming two generations. UC IPM puts a single female and her offspring at over 30,000 individuals in a year. A factor of three, from different starting assumptions.

What survives the disagreement. All four sources describe the same curve: a reproductive rate high enough that a handful of insects in March is an infestation by August, and fast enough that a fortnight of delay is measurable. That is the operational fact, and it does not depend on which figure you believe.

The things that most often carry them in

Used appliances. UC IPM names appliances first among the items to check. A second-hand fridge, microwave, washer or dishwasher has warm voids and motor housings that are effectively purpose-built harbourage, and the previous owner may have had no idea. This is the single most common introduction we see, and in a market like ours — where a lot of good used equipment moves between households and through oilfield housing — it is worth naming plainly.

Boxes and things out of storage. Both UC IPM and Penn State name boxes. An egg case glued into a flute or a fold is smaller than a coffee bean, it does not move, and it will sit there for weeks. A unit that has been in a storage building on the edge of town for a season is a plausible source in a way that a new purchase is not.

Groceries. AgriLife names groceries alongside boxes. Nobody needs to feel careless about this — it is not a thing that can reasonably be inspected for.

Second-hand furniture. On the list at UC IPM. The joints and undersides are the places to look before it comes through the door.

Suitcases and everything that travels. Penn State includes them. A stay somewhere with a problem is enough.

And the neighbouring unit, covered above, which is a supply route rather than a single event and is the reason a flat can be reinfested after a clean treatment.

What to do with that list. Not worry about it constantly. Look properly at the two things on it that are worth looking at — a used appliance before it is plumbed in, and boxes coming out of long storage — and let the rest go. The realistic goal is catching an introduction early, not preventing every one of them, because the sources are clear that prevention at the door is not fully achievable.

Something worth pointing out about the source itself

AgriLife's cockroach publication has South Plains authorship. The 2017 extension publication we have been quoting lists three authors, and one of them is the AgriLife Extension agent for Hockley, Cochran and Lamb counties — that is Levelland, Morton and Littlefield, an hour or so north of us.

Why we are bothering to say that. Because on most of this site we have to be careful to note the opposite. There is no AgriLife structural pest guide written for the Llano Estacado or the Permian Basin as a distinct region, so nearly everything we cite is statewide material that we then have to apply locally and say so. This is one of the very few publications where somebody who works in this landscape had a hand in the text.

It does not change the biology. A German cockroach behaves the same in Levelland as in Houston. But when a page is built on the honesty of its sourcing, a source with local authorship is worth naming, and so is the fact that it is unusual.

What we do about it

First, we are not going to make you feel bad. That sounds soft for a service page and it is not. A household that feels accused hides the problem, delays the call, and cleans in ways that make the inspection harder. The job goes better when everybody starts from the sourced position that this is a transport problem.

The inspection targets crevices and moisture, not surfaces. Behind and under appliances, the motor housing of the fridge, the dishwasher void, under-sink cabinets, the water heater surround, and the seams and trim in between. Monitors go where the data says they catch — by the stove and the refrigerator.

The treatment is bait-led, and there is a reason for that which we have set out in full on the German cockroach library page, including the documented phenomenon of bait aversion and why the response to an ignored bait is to rotate rather than to reach for a spray can. AgriLife's own advice on that page's subject is to switch active ingredients regularly to avoid creating resistant populations.

And there is work that is yours rather than ours, which we will hand you as a list rather than a lecture: get behind the appliances once, fix the slow leak, close the crevices with caulk, and be careful what comes into the house — particularly used appliances and boxes out of storage, which the sources name directly.

If you rent, tell the manager in writing. The building data above is the reason. A treatment inside your unit is worth having; a building-level response is worth roughly twice as much, and no individual tenant can arrange one alone.

What counts as food to a cockroach?

Far less than you would think, and this is the part that catches out careful households. UC IPM puts it precisely: even tiny amounts of crumbs or liquids caught between cracks provide a food source. How did they get past me? I check things.

Because the things you would need to spot are about the size of a comma. NC State notes that even with the most stringent inspection, small nymphs can easily be overlooked. An egg case tucked into the seam of a cardboard flat or the underside of an appliance is smaller than a coffee bean and does not move. UC IPM specifically directs attention to items brought into a building — appliances, furniture, boxes, and things that were recently in storage — and Penn State says it is difficult to keep cockroaches out via boxes, grocery bags, suitcases and the like.

I live in an apartment. Does my neighbour matter?

Very much, and there is real data on it rather than just an opinion.
