A scorpion in the bathtub
The two explanations everybody gives for this are both unsourced. No extension service says scorpions come up through drains, and none says they cannot climb out of porcelain. What is documented, from Oklahoma State, is that scorpions require some moisture and are often attracted to the damp areas around plumbing and around air conditioning condensers and evaporators — which is a different explanation with different consequences.
There are two things everybody in West Texas knows about this. It came up the drain. And it is stuck in the tub because it cannot climb the sides.
We went looking for the source of both. Neither has one. We checked AgriLife's scorpion publication, Texas A&M's school pest management guidance, the Texas insect field guide, Oklahoma State, Utah State, the University of Arizona and the National Park Service. Not one of them mentions drains, bathtubs, sinks or smooth surfaces. Every page making those claims was a pest control company's blog or a hobbyist forum.
That is worth a page on its own, because this is exactly how a plausible story becomes a fact that everybody repeats. And there is a properly sourced explanation sitting underneath, which points at a different part of your house and suggests a different thing to do about it.
What is actually documented
The sentence that does the work comes from Oklahoma State's extension service, not from AgriLife: scorpions are dry-land creatures and are not normally found in extremely damp areas, but they do require some moisture and are often attracted to the damp areas around plumbing, condensers, and the evaporators of air conditioning units.
Read that carefully, because it says two things at once. They are not water-loving animals — a wet environment is not what they are after. But they do need some moisture, and in a landscape where the outdoor humidity spends much of the year in the teens, the places that reliably have any are indoors and mechanical: around a plumbing penetration, at a condensate line, under a cooler.
Now add the temperature mechanism from AgriLife. It notes that it is common for this scorpion to climb trees and walls and that they are often found in the attics of homes — and then, crucially, that during periods of hot weather scorpions may move into living areas to escape the high temperatures in attics.
Put those together and the bathroom stops being mysterious. A nocturnal animal already in the structure, coming down out of an attic that hit a hundred and forty degrees in the afternoon, moving toward the coolest and dampest part of the interior. That is a bathroom in a Permian Basin July, and a tub is the lowest surface in it.
Which changes what you would do about it. If the drain story were true, the answer would be plumbing. Since the documented mechanism is moisture and heat, the answer is the attic, the exterior gaps, the condensate and the plumbing penetrations — not the drain itself.
The two claims, audited
Claim one: it came up through the drain. Not verified, and effectively contradicted. No extension or agency source we could find says scorpions enter through plumbing drains. AgriLife's scorpion publication does not mention drains at all. And the nearest sourced statement runs the other way — dry-land creatures, not normally found in extremely damp areas, attracted to the damp around plumbing rather than into it. Meanwhile every source that does discuss entry names the same handful of routes, and plumbing is not among them.
Claim two: it cannot climb out of the tub. Not verified either way. Ten sources checked, none addresses smooth or glazed surfaces. What is documented is the opposite face of the question: AgriLife describes this species climbing trees and walls and turning up in attics, which establishes that it climbs rough vertical surfaces well. That tells you nothing about porcelain.
Our honest position on claim two. It may well be true. It matches what people report, it matches what we see, and there is a straightforward physical reason it could be. But "everyone observes it" and "it is documented" are different standards, and this whole site runs on keeping them apart. So: common field observation, not a sourced fact, and labelled that way.
Why bother auditing a harmless story? Because it is not harmless. A homeowner who believes the drain story pours something down a drain, buys a stopper, calls a plumber — and leaves the door sweep, the weep holes and the attic exactly as they were. A wrong mechanism sends effort to the wrong place, which is the practical cost of an unexamined claim.
How they actually get in
Under the door, first and most often. Texas A&M's school pest management guidance states that most scorpions gain access through gaps under exterior doors, and its first recommendation is tight-fitting door sweeps and thresholds on all external doorways. On the housing stock here, an old sweep that has curled up at the ends is close to a standing invitation.
Cracks and crevices in the exterior. Oklahoma State names them directly, and adds the observation that when scorpions enter buildings it is often because their outdoor habitat has been disrupted in some way. In a region with constant construction, clearing and caliche work, that disruption is close to a permanent condition.
Weep holes. AgriLife's exclusion guidance names plugging weep holes in stone or brick veneer with steel wool, copper mesh, pieces of nylon scouring pad or small squares of screen wire. On brick-veneer houses this is one of the highest-value hours anybody can spend.
Windows and screens. AgriLife's list includes weather stripping around loose-fitting doors and windows, and screens kept in good repair and fitting tightly in the frame. The University of Arizona names poorly maintained door sweeps and window screens in the same breath.
Carried in. Firewood is the one everybody underestimates. AgriLife's instruction is blunt — never bring firewood inside the structure unless it is placed directly on the fire. Arizona says the same thing about firewood as a vehicle.
And the harbourage that makes it worth their while. Texas A&M notes that buildings and related structures provide numerous hiding places for scorpions, and AgriLife's habitat guidance is to remove trash, logs, boards, stones, bricks and other objects from around the structure, keep grass closely mown near it and prune bushes and overhanging branches away. What to do in the moment, and then afterwards
In the moment: a jar and a piece of card. Slide the card underneath, invert the jar over it, and you have contained it without getting a hand near it. Then take it outside or keep it if you want it identified. This is not brave or clever; it is just the least eventful way to end the situation.
If somebody is stung. AgriLife's guidance is an ice pack to relieve some of the pain. Its escalation condition is specific: if swelling or pain persists, or if breathing difficulties occur, immediate medical attention is necessary. Oklahoma State's framing is that for most people the sting is slightly more painful than a bee or wasp sting, and AgriLife's overall assessment is that stings from Texas scorpions produce only moderate reactions in most people because the poison has little effect on the nervous system. A child, a known allergy, or anything not behaving the way those descriptions suggest is a call to a doctor or poison control — not to a pest control company.
That night: find out whether there are more. Texas A&M's school guidance notes that scorpions are among the few animals that fluoresce, or glow, under UVB black light, and the University of Arizona says they can be spotted from several yards away. Walk the perimeter after dark with a UV light. One scorpion in a tub is an anecdote; six along the foundation is a finding. This week: the door sweep. If the sources name one entry route above all others it is the gap under an exterior door, and a sweep is the cheapest correction in this entire trade. Then the weep holes, then the screens.
And the seasonal expectation. Oklahoma State notes they do not usually enter houses in winter because cold makes them sluggish, and that late spring and early summer rains often push them to seek drier habitat. So the quiet months are real and they are not evidence that anything was solved.
The rooms this happens in, and what they have in common
Bathrooms. The most reported room by a wide margin, and the one this page is named after. Everything the sourced mechanism predicts is there at once: the dampest air in the house, plumbing penetrations through the wall and floor, a tub or shower pan that stays cool, and a room that is dark and undisturbed for most of the twenty-four hours.
Kitchens and utility rooms. Same reasons in a different arrangement. A sink cabinet with a supply line coming through the wall, the back of a dishwasher, the pan under a water heater, the drain line from a washing machine. Oklahoma State's list of attractive damp places is essentially a description of the plumbing side of a house.
Around the cooler or the air handler. The same source names condensers and the evaporators of air conditioning units directly. On the properties here, a great many of which run evaporative coolers for part of the year, that is a genuinely damp piece of equipment sitting on a roof or against a wall in an otherwise arid landscape, often with a supply line and a bleed-off running from it.
Garages, sheds and mud rooms. These are the transitional spaces — an exterior door with a tired sweep, boxes and stored material giving harbourage, and a connection to the living space. AgriLife's point that buildings and related structures provide numerous hiding places applies most strongly to the buildings nobody keeps tidy.
And the floor, generally, at night. AgriLife notes that scorpions are nocturnal, hiding during the day and becoming active at night. The classic version of this call is somebody crossing a dark hallway barefoot at two in the morning, which is a timing problem as much as a pest problem — and shoes by the bed during a bad summer is advice that costs nothing.
What all of those have in common is moisture, darkness and a route in. None of them is a drain. If you are trying to work out where to spend an afternoon on this, walk the house looking for those three things together, and then walk the outside looking for the gaps that connect them to the yard.
Why we bothered to write this
Because it would have been easier not to. The drain story is a good story. It creates urgency, it points at something a company can be called about, and no customer would ever check it. Repeating it costs nothing and it would have made this a shorter, more confident page.
And because the alternative is a site that cannot be checked. Everything on this site is written to be traceable to a source, and the honest consequence of that rule is that sometimes the answer is "the thing everybody says is not written down anywhere". A page that only reports the tidy findings is not actually applying the rule.
What you are left with is still useful. A sourced mechanism — moisture and heat, not plumbing. A sourced list of entry routes, with the most common one named. A sourced severity picture and a clear condition for seeking medical attention. A free survey method that gives you a real answer tonight. That is more actionable than the story we did not repeat.
There is a wider version of this worth naming. A great deal of what circulates about scorpions in this region has the same provenance as the drain story — repeated between companies until it reads as established. We have run into it more than once building this site, and where a claim turns out to have no source behind it, our practice is to say so on the page rather than quietly omit it. Omission leaves the story intact everywhere else; saying so at least gives a reader somewhere to check.
And where we do not know, you know that too. Whether a scorpion can climb out of a bath is, as far as the published record goes, an open question. That is a small thing to be uncertain about, and being visibly honest about the small things is how a reader decides whether to trust the large ones.

Then why was it in the tub?
The best-sourced answer is moisture. Oklahoma State’s statement covers the damp areas around plumbing, condensers and the evaporators of air conditioning units. A bathroom in a dry climate is the most reliably humid room in the house, and a bathtub is a low point in it. Add AgriLife’s observation that during hot weather scorpions may move into living areas to escape the high temperatures in attics, and you have a nocturnal animal coming down out of a 140-degree attic looking for somewhere cooler and damper. The bathroom is the obvious destination.
Is it true they cannot climb out of a bath?
We do not know, and we are going to be straight about that rather than repeat it. We checked ten extension and agency sources, including AgriLife’s own scorpion publication, and none of them addresses smooth surfaces, tubs or sinks. The claim appears only in commercial blogs and hobbyist forums. What is documented is the opposite side of the coin — AgriLife notes it is common for this scorpion to climb trees and walls, and that they are often found in attics — but that a scorpion climbs a rough wall does not establish that it cannot climb glazed porcelain. It might be true. It is not sourced, so we are not going to tell you it is.
How did it get in the house at all?
Through the places every source names, none of which is plumbing. Texas A&M’s school IPM guidance states that most scorpions gain access through gaps under exterior doors. Oklahoma State names cracks and crevices around the outside of a structure. The University of Arizona adds firewood carried indoors, poorly maintained door sweeps and window screens. Why now? It has been fine for months.

Not very, and the sources are consistent about it. AgriLife states that stings from Texas scorpions produce only moderate reactions in most people because the poison has little effect on the nervous system. Its urban entomology programme says the striped bark scorpion has a painful sting but is not deadly. Oklahoma State’s comparison is that for most people, a scorpion sting is slightly more painful than a bee or wasp sting. Texas A&M’s school guidance notes that of the Centruroides species, only the Arizona bark scorpion is considered potentially deadly.
What do I do about a sting?
AgriLife’s guidance is an ice pack applied to the affected area to relieve some of the pain, and then a clear condition for escalating: if swelling or pain persists, or if breathing difficulties occur, immediate medical attention is necessary. That is the line worth remembering — not the pain itself, which is expected, but persistence and any breathing difficulty. Small children, anybody with a known allergy history, and any sting that does not behave the way the sources describe all warrant a call to a doctor or to poison control rather than to us.
