Mud tubes on the foundation

A mud tube is a shelter tube built by foraging workers, and AgriLife says any tube found should be broken open to check for live termites. But breaking them achieves nothing else — Mississippi State puts it plainly: destroying the tubes will not control the termites, they are still there in the ground and will find other ways in. The colony is under the slab, not on the wall.

Somebody was moving a planter, or trimming along the base of a wall, and found a thin ribbon of dried mud running up the concrete. It is one of the few pest findings that is genuinely diagnostic — you have not found something that might be a problem, you have found a structure built by an insect to reach your house.

What follows is usually one of two mistakes. Either the tube gets knocked off and the matter is considered handled, or it gets sprayed with something from a hardware store. Both feel like action and neither touches the colony, which is in the soil and unaffected by anything happening on the surface of your wall.

Mississippi State's extension service says it in one sentence: simply destroying the tubes will not control the termites; they are still there in the ground and will find other ways to get into the building. That is the frame for this whole page.

A shelter tube is transport infrastructure. AgriLife describes worker termites foraging above ground protecting themselves with shelter tubes or mud tubes, made from particles of soil or wood and bits of debris held together by salivary and faecal secretions. That is the material: dirt, wood, spit and droppings.

Why they need it. Subterranean termites are soft-bodied and lose moisture fast. Open air on a July afternoon in the Permian Basin would kill a worker in short order. The tube carries the soil environment up the wall with them — humid, dark, protected from ants and from the sun.

Size and shape. Kentucky gives the useful benchmark: typically about the diameter of a pencil, sometimes thicker. AgriLife notes the two builds — some tubes thinly constructed, some large with thick walls to accommodate termites moving vertically between the soil and their food source. A thick, heavily built tube suggests sustained traffic rather than a probe.

What it means on its own. AgriLife is explicit that the presence of shelter tubes and mud within galleries indicates an active infestation. That sentence is worth re-reading, because plenty of people talk themselves out of a tube on the basis that they have not seen an insect.

One attribution note, because we care about this. You will find a tidy four-way classification of mud tubes on the internet — working tubes, exploratory tubes, drop tubes and swarm tubes. That typology is real and it comes from the University of California's IPM programme. It is not AgriLife's; AgriLife distinguishes only thin-walled from thick-walled. We mention the distinction because attributing California's categories to Texas A&M is a small dishonesty that is very widely committed.

Where a tube sits is worth noting. Tubes on the outside of a stem wall are the common finding. Tubes higher up a building, on interior walls or ceilings, are treated by Mississippi State as a signal pointing toward Formosan termites — which is a different and larger problem, and one we address at the end of this page rather than assume.

Break one open — properly, and only one

AgriLife's instruction is direct: any mud tubes found should be broken open to check for live termites. So the answer to "should I touch it" is yes, with a method.

The method, from Mississippi State. Carefully break a one-inch section of the tube, then watch — either you see termites at the moment you open it, or you come back over the next few days and find the section repaired. Either result tells you the building has an active infestation. That repair test is the good part: it costs nothing, it takes a week, and a rebuilt tube is unambiguous.

Break one, not all. If you knock every tube off the wall you have destroyed the thing you would have watched, and you have made an inspection harder for whoever comes next. Leave the rest in place and photograph them.

Now the part where we stop short of what other sites will tell you. We could not find any extension source stating that a negative check clears a building. Nobody publishes an interpretation of an abandoned tube in either direction. What Mississippi State does say is that if you find mud shelter tubes it is a good idea to have the building professionally inspected even if you do not see live termites and even if the tube is not repaired.

So the honest reading is this. A tube is evidence that subterranean termites reached this structure. Live termites in the broken section confirm current activity. No termites in one section at one moment confirms nothing much at all — you have sampled an inch of a system you cannot see.

Why the can of spray is the wrong tool

The colony is not on your wall. Everything visible is foraging infrastructure reaching out from a nest in the soil. Treating the visible part is treating the corridor and leaving the building.

What the sources actually say. Mississippi State: destroying the tubes will not control the termites, they are still there in the ground and will find other ways to get into the building. Kentucky: do-it-yourself products sold at retail stores or bought over the internet will seldom eradicate an existing termite problem, and its answer on whether homeowners should attempt it is that ridding a home of termites requires special skills. Purdue points at the elaborate equipment required and the complicated nature of the process. The University of California notes that applications of registered pesticides here are highly regulated and require a licensed professional.

And one thing we are deliberately not telling you. There is a widely repeated claim that spraying a tube makes matters actively worse — that it scatters the colony, or ruins a later bait programme. We went looking for a source and could not find one outside commercial marketing. So we are not going to say it. The sourced objection stands on its own without embellishment: it does not reach the colony.

What actually reaches a colony is a properly applied liquid termiticide barrier or a bait system, both of which are licensed work and both of which are covered on the termite control page along with what we do and do not offer.

How they get in through a slab, and the Texas-specific answer

The general route. AgriLife: termites enter buildings through wood in direct contact with soil, and by building shelter tubes over or through cracks in foundations. Its inspection instruction names all cracks and expansion joints in the foundation, and the points where plumbing or utility pipes enter the foundation or flooring. Purdue's account of slab houses is the same: expansion joints, cracks, and utility and sewer pipe openings.

Then the bath trap, which is the one worth knowing about here. Texas A&M has material on this specifically, and it is genuinely Texas-specific building practice. A bath trap is a type of slab leave-out located under a bathtub — an area where concrete was deliberately omitted so the tub drain could be plumbed. Texas A&M's assessment is blunt: it provides an excellent entry point for termites, ants, millipedes and some cockroaches.

And the detail that makes it worse. The wood or cardboard forms used to make the trap are frequently left in place after construction. So there is cellulose sitting inside an opening in the slab, in a damp location, out of sight. Texas A&M's recommendation follows directly: bath traps and other slab leave-outs should be one of the first places inspected inside the home for termite activity.

Even a sealed trap is not a settled matter. Texas A&M notes that termites may still find a crack in the joint large enough to gain entry into the tub void. Post-construction options it describes include filling the void with an insecticide, sometimes combined with sand or soil, or filling it with termiticide foam so that the material contacts all surfaces.

One more slab detail people miss. Grade matters. Soil, mulch or a raised bed piled against a stem wall can bring the ground above the level of the slab edge, which hides the very surface a tube would have to cross to be seen. That is one of the few genuinely free termite measures available: pull the dirt back and keep a band of the foundation visible, so that the next tube announces itself rather than arriving unseen behind a flower bed.

Which is why the inside inspection is not a formality. A great deal of the housing stock across Seminole, Denver City, Seagraves, Andrews and the Basin towns is slab on grade, built exactly this way. Finding a tube outside and never opening the tub access panel is half a job.

What state rule entitles you to before anybody treats

A written estimate, before the work. The rule allows a verbal estimate to indicate a general range of treatment costs, but a written estimate must be provided before beginning a treatment. A number said aloud on a driveway is not compliance.

Disclosure documents with real content in them. They must identify the business and its licence number, describe the property and structure with perimeter measurements, and include a diagram showing where activity was found, what is to be treated and what conditions are conducive to infestation. They must give the termiticide concentration or the number of bait stations, the warranty details, and definitions of what partial, spot, baiting and barrier treatments mean — because those words are where most of the misunderstanding in this trade lives.

Signed by somebody licensed in the right category. The documents must carry the signature of approval of a certified applicator or licensed technician in the termite category employed by the company. A general pest licence is not that category — the same point that governs WDI reports.

And a consumer information sheet, which is worth reading. It sets out that pesticides must be registered with the EPA and the Texas Department of Agriculture before use in Texas, that health and safety information for a specific product is on the label or safety data sheet and can be supplied on request, that signs are posted at least forty-eight hours before treatment, and that on a home solicitation you have the right to cancel the contract within seventy-two hours. It also gives you the Structural Pest Control Service complaint line and the National Pesticide Information Center.

Why a pest control company is publishing the complaint line. Because a customer who knows what the paperwork should contain is a customer who cannot be sold a spot treatment described as a barrier. That is a good outcome for everybody doing this work honestly, and only a bad outcome for the people who are not.

The Formosan question, answered to the limit of what is published

What is documented. AgriLife names two major types in Texas — the native subterranean termite and the Formosan subterranean termite. The first Texas infestations of Formosan termites were discovered in 1956 near the Houston Ship Channel in Pasadena, Harris County. They have since been found in at least thirty Texas counties and all major metropolitan areas, and AgriLife notes they are spreading to more counties each year.

Why anybody cares. AgriLife states Formosan colonies are at least four times as large as those of native subterranean termites, that they build a primary nest in the soil out of faecal material and cellulose called carton, and — the part that changes an inspection — that they regularly construct aerial nests within the structures they infest. An aerial nest does not need soil contact, which breaks the assumption underneath most of this page.

And what we cannot tell you. No source we could reach publishes the county list. The state forest service distribution map was not retrievable. So we are unable to say that Formosan termites are absent from Gaines County or the Permian Basin. What we can say is that we found no published record placing them here, that the documented concentration is metropolitan, and that the spread is described as ongoing.

What that means practically. We treat the native subterranean termite as the default here, because that is what the evidence supports, and we do not diagnose a Formosan infestation from a photograph or a phone call. If tubes are appearing high on interior walls or ceilings, or a nest appears without soil contact, that is worth taking seriously rather than explaining away — and it is a finding, not an assumption.

What is a mud tube, exactly?

Either result tells you the building has an active infestation. Break one section, not all of them, so you leave yourself something to observe.

The tube was empty. Am I in the clear?

We are not going to give you a confident answer on that, because no extension source we could find addresses abandoned tubes in either direction. What is sourced is Mississippi State’s position that if you find mud shelter tubes it is a good idea to have the building professionally inspected even if you do not see live termites and even if the tube is not repaired. A tube is evidence that subterranean termites reached that structure. One section, opened at one moment, with nothing visible in it, does not clear the building.

Can I just spray it?

You can, and it will not do what you want. Mississippi State states that simply destroying the tubes will not control the termites — they are still there in the ground and will find other ways to get into the building. Kentucky adds that do-it-yourself products sold at retail or over the internet will seldom eradicate an existing termite problem. We are deliberately not repeating the claim you will read elsewhere that spraying makes things worse by scattering the colony; we could not source that, so we are not going to say it. The sourced objection is simpler — the colony is in the soil and a wall-surface spray does not reach it.

A slab is not a barrier so much as a surface with a defined set of gaps in it, and termites are extremely good at finding them.

What is a bath trap and why do you keep mentioning it?

It is the Texas answer to the previous question.
